During the first systematic excavation of the temple, in 1812, by a group of foreign scientists, the frieze plates were discovered under fallen architectural parts. During the same survey, the oldest Corinthian capitals in the history of Greek architecture were found.
In 1982 the Ministry of Culture set up a committee which undertook the restoration of the monument. The loose ground on which it is built, the cold climatic conditions prevailing in the area and the limestone material from which it is made, imposed the permanent covering of the temple with a roof since 1987, while the extremely difficult work of restoration and rehabilitation of the monument is in progress.
