Skala is a historic village south of Meligalas. The village is well known as within 300 meters is the location of Paloukorachi, where it was a place of torture during the Turkish occupation. The Ottomans used to drive thieves and charioteers there and kill them by piercing them with stakes. In this way they punished the rebels and at the same time intimidated the other inhabitants of the area.

It is believed that the 1821 revolution started from Skala, when on 22 March Turkish guards of the village were killed and the postman of the Pasha of Tripoli was arrested, thus preventing the arrest of Greeks and preventing the revolution. As Kolokotronis recounts in his memoirs, it was there that he met Papafletsa and they made their proclamation known, saying: ‘The time has come and the stage of glory and freedom has been opened’. In 1825, Kountouriotis (Prime Minister) settled in Skala with Alexander Mavrokordatos, campaigning against Ibrahim.
